Come Saturdays, tourists from all over the world flock to Otavalo to shop. For one day only, the streets of downtown Otavalo turn into one gigantic outdoor market selling lots of fun stuff — cloths, alpaca and llama blankets, sweaters, scarves, bags, wood carvings, paintings, etc, etc, — you name it. But if one happens to be in Otavalo during the week , the market shrinks down to the location of Plaza de los Ponchos where one can have lots of the same fun –bargaining and shopping.
When guests come, we often take them to Otavalo in the mornings to shop, and we always try for Saturday, if possible. Then we go have lunch at one of the many restaurants or coffee houses. After that, it’s time to catch a cab and head over to Peguche Falls, where there is even more shopping and some small restaurants, as well. For a full day like this, we highly recommend very comfortable shoes.
As said, just a short taxi ride from Otavalo, Peguche Falls is another gem to be found in Imbabura.
And, you can now ride the new train line from Otavalo to Salinas de Ibarra! See schedule and info at: Tren Excursions Ecuador
