06/14/2017: It was my turn to go the the dentista today in Otavalo to receive a cleaning (using the ultrasonic cleaning method). X-rays came up in conversation. She said that, here in Ecuador, they will not do an x-ray unless there is an actual problem going on in your mouth. Another hurray-hurrah! We have always despised being required to get an x-ray each and every time we received a cleaning in the US of A. It’s just so unnecessary and just plain wrong. And, Ecuador agrees. 🙂

She also informed us that if you want a toothpaste without fluoride in Ecuador, you can buy the kids toothpastes. Those toothpastes are made without fluoride and soap. They are much cheaper than the fluoride-free adult brands–which are difficult to even find. However, I’d still read the labels, and some kids brands still aren’t all that cheap.

12/2016 — Stars Wars: Rogue One (3D)

During the day the movie was only in Spanish, but at 9 pm at night there was a regular showing of this flick in English. We however — 60 of us English speakers — rented a movie theater in Ibarra at 11 in the morning and enjoyed the latest installment of Star Wars — Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Another cool time at the movies here in Ecuador.

09/2016 — Star Trek Beyond 3D
star-stek-movie It was fun seeing Star Trek Beyond 3D in English with a bunch of English speaking friends. About 50 of us or so requested a theater all to ourselves! The price for each was even a couple of bucks lower than what a regular showing would cost–which currently is $5.50 for 3D.  However, this time around, and for this particular movie, there was not a regular showing in English, so we had to request the movie. Giving them 24 hour notice, the theater in Ibarra was able to simply request a key code for Star Trek Beyond in English, and walla, we had the theater all to ourselves the following day at 12:00 noon. It was great! In fact, anyone can negotiate a price for any current movie, see it in English and have a theater all to themselves. Prices will vary and definitely will need to be negotiated for sure. We were informed that one couple even got a private showing for two for another film for around $30.00. In the end, they did charge us slightly more than what we had originally agreed to–welcome to Ecuador–but it was all worth it. Cool!
